It has been more than seventy years since young people, boys and girls, of all backgrounds and confessions, roses and resedas, found themselves in the woods which we borrow from them today. It was not to illustrate liberty but to defend it, in arms, against the Nazis. Unless we pretend to suffer from amnesia, we know what we owe to these hardships and victories. It seems necessary, in our time, to recall that we do not mistake the forest for a picture rail.
