O trees, O trees black and white, I salute you in silence! Indeed, the Prayer to Masks by Léopold Sédar Senghor is unashamedly misappropriated here, but no doubt the great griot will forgive us for how much Julien Zoh Nihouah’s totems seem to “bring to life” the immobile steres of our western felling. Having become inhabited and endowed once again with personalities, the felled trunks rediscover their arrogance and, if stretched out, they stare at us like disdainful odalisques.
