Installation by Pierre Balandier (France)
presented on 1st July 2017 at Chamblay (France)
Carved into abandoned Christmas trees, Pierre Balandier’s trees seem to owe more to the gangs of Detroit, his adoptive city, than to the lumber-jacks of Ronsard’s Gâtine Forest. Tree and forest have long been synonyms for javelins, then the navy. Planted by ruling leaders at the peak of their power, the extent of the forest and the beauty of the specimens it accommodated were intended to demonstrate the kingdom’s might. In this way, Pierre Baladier’s baseball bats merge strangely with the old tree of Athena, Goddess of Wisdom and Just War.
